Small Bedroom Makeover Tips

Bedroom Makeover 1

As of this summer, we have officially lived in our little Venice Bungalow rental for 6 years. SIX YEARS. Just thinking about it completely boggles my mind, since for most of my adult life I’ve basically been a nomad, living in apartment after apartment for no more than 2 years at a time. With that thought in mind, I decided back in May that it was time to upgrade our bedroom because let’s be real – sleeping on a mattress + box spring on the floor wasn’t cutting it anymore!

CREATE A FOCAL POINT: Since our headboard isn’t very prominent, we used this large vintage rug hook wall art to create a focal point in the bedroom, and accented it with smaller pieces of art like this wall hanging from Maptote. Even everyday accessories such as hats can become decor when you display them in an artful way!

THINK SMALL: Making over any room of a house comes with it’s challenges, and making over a tiny bedroom with an attached bathroom is even more of a challenge since the bed can only face maybe 2 ways. The first step for us was to update our bed situation. Because our bedroom is so small – around 100 square feet –  having a queen sized mattress without a frame was kind of a burden. I know it’s only a few inches, but trust me, those few inches make a huge difference. We decided to downgrade on size, but upgrade in quality by going with a new full size mattress from Helix Sleep for customized comfort, and ASKVOLL bed frame from Ikea because we liked the minimal design, and also because it provides space for storage underneath. Plus, our cats now have a place to hide when the vacuum comes out to play.

Bedroom Makeover 6

COMFORT FIRST: When it came time to dress our new bed, I was looking for something simple + soft that would keep us cool throughout the night. Christopher tends to sweat when he sleeps, so getting a new comforter was totally out of the question. Instead, I pulled my favorite vintage Turkish blanket out of our Tawas Trading Co. inventory and paired it with the matte Sateen Venice Set from Parachute Home. I love how comfortable they are together, and especially how luxe the sateen sheets feel, while also being more wrinkle resistant than most bedding. I’ve literally never slept better!

Bedroom Makeover 3MULTI-FUNCTIONAL: I love mid century modern slat benches for their versatility. So naturally when I spotted this smaller than usual one at The Venice Flea Market last month, I immediately knew it would be prefect for our bedroom. The missing piece of the puzzle! Most days we use it as a side table, but occasionally we also use it for seating. Another great flea market find is the accordion hanger we have above the bench. They come in all shapes and sizes, and are ideal for literally anything.

Bedroom Makeover 5

LET THERE BE LIGHT: As in any small space, great lighting is such a necessity. We have amazing natural light that floods in during the day, but once the sun goes down, our bedroom tends to become a dark dungeon. When I discovered C by GE, I knew they’d be the ideal light bulbs for our bedroom. Their bluetooth LED bulbs allow you to customize light levels at various times of the day, to your preference. Plus, it’s so nice being able to turn lights on/off remotely via my phone, from bed or even from another room in the house. It’s the best!

Bedroom Makeover 4

The only thing we’re still trying to figure out is storage. This is a challenge throughout in our entire bungalow, but especially our bedroom since we only have an itty bitty closet. What are some of your home design/decor challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Instagram Sundays / 03

Last Sunday I metup with Cori Magee for brunch, some wine and lots of life and girl chatter. Definitely left feeling inspired and am always excited to meet a kindred spirit.

Our garden has been growing like crazy! I gathered all of these in one go. Had no idea we had so many green peppers. Feeling super grateful for being able to grow some of our own food right in our yard.

I hate to talk about this but fleas are SO bad this season! Even with meds from the vet, both our cats and #rustytaylorlee are still having issues. I’ve been hearing the same troubles from friends… what’s the deal? Anyway, I’ve been bringing Rusty to work with me every so often now that Christopher has been working long days at Civilianaire.

Saw this little baby over by the studio. I’m so into Deus ex Machina‘s Parking Lot d’Elegance which has totally become a thing of it’s own on Instagram

I went on a little field trip last Thursday and made a pitstop at 356 Mission – the new Ooga Booga store/gallery. I loved the vibrant colors of this group of plants and succulents in the doorway. So pretty, pretty.

I spent a good part of my weekend weeding and cleaning up our garden. I had neglected it for most of the summer and while most would have given up with the half burnt-sun bleached tomato plant, and flowering basil – I’m giving it another go.

Anyway, follow me on Instagram here to see my daily explorations!

Lovelist / 03: Everyday Home Essentials

Homebody. That’s me. I’m not quite sure when it began, but let me tell you… it is glorious. Sure, I’m up for a weekend adventure as much as the next gal, but sometimes it’s just good to be home. Since we moved to LA from Chicago nearly 3 years ago, I’ve been trying really hard to only buy things that I really want in our space since we really don’t have much storage in our Venice bungalow. As we’ve paired down, I’ve started to really love the things we choose to bring into our domicile. Here are a few we use on the daily + some on my wishlist that I love.

Top 5 Everyday Home Essentials

1 / HAY Tea Towels – These fun everyday towels designed by danish designer HAY are bright, modern and perfect.

2 / Dr. Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap – I really got into Dr. Bronners after watching the documentary “Dr. Bronners Magic Soapbox” on Netflix. This soap is literally the only base cleaning agent you’ll ever need. I use it for literally everything – as soap in the shower, shampoo, fruit + veggie cleaner, and evens cleans grease.

3 / Palo Santo Sticks – I first discovered these at Individual Medley in Atwater Village with my friend Melanie. Palo Santo literally means “Holy Stick” or “Sacred Wood” and is a highly natural wood/aromatic incense used for centuries by the Incas and indigenous people of the Andes as a high spiritual remedy for purifying and cleansing, to get rid of evil spirits and misfortune, as well as for medicinal purposes. It’s is often used by shamans in sacred plant spirit ceremonies. I love sage but this is so next level!

4 / Mondrian Glass Tumblers – We found a set of 4 of these at Out of the Closet in Venice, pretty much brand new, and I am obsessed. I’ve always had a place in my heart for Mondrian and gladly welcomed these babies into my home. Heavy duty and uber practical, I drink everything from almond milk to rose from them.

5 / Kaleido Trays – HAY does it again. These mix + match modern geotastic trays come various sizes + colors and stylishly hold everything from keys, to letters and even accessories.

Design of Illustrator Olimpia Zagnoli

Oh hello there, boobies! This was my first reaction when I came across the illustration Olimpia Zagnoli did for 55DSL (shown above) as I scrolled through her portfolio the other day. I came across her work on none other than Pinterest and was immediately sucked into the bright colors and starkness of her shapes and overall design. It’s brilliant, right? Olimpia has collaborated with the best of the best brands and publications including The New York Times, Google, Levi’s and many more. Below are a few of my favorites but you can see more of her work + read her bio here. Needless to say, I am obsessed!

Marbling Prints / Pernilles Snedker Hansen

I came across these marbled prints on Pinterest the other day and didn’t realize they were by Copenhagen designer Pernilles Snedker Hansen, but it makes complete sense – when you look at her pieces, the marbling almost looks as if they were layers/rings of wood. Remember this post I did on her marbled wood floors? Anyway, it’s crazy how far marbling has come. It’s literally everywhere these days (Ksteggy was totally onto a trend over a year ago), especially in home decor and fashion. I mean, you can literally marble anything… right?
