Korean Snacks at Gook Hwa House

Gook Hwa House

Completely obsessed with these little red bean cakes from Gook Hwa House located outside of the Assi Supermarket in Koreatown. How have I lived here for a year and not discovered this until now, I do not know. Made fresh on the spot, you can help yourself to however many of the little delicious morsels as you can stuff into a bag. Okay, they’re 9 for $3 but it’s pretty much a whole bag full. What’s even cooler is that its literally all self serve…even when it comes to paying. You put your money in a bin, and take the proper change from the other bins. Kinda cool right?

Since I’m Chinese, and not Korean I have no idea how to pronounce these but the red bean cakes are called “gook hwa bbang” and the little sweet pancakes they have that are $1 each are called “ho dduk” which are a favorite of the boyfriend. They taste like an asian cinnamon roll pancake…if there were such a thing. This dude seriously has the best job ever. Hanging out making delectable treats all day. I confess, I end up eating all 9 in one sitting! Yes, this is why I still can’t fit into my favorite pair of Cheap Mondays.
